DEAR ADAM

What was it, Adam?

What was troubling you?

What demons led you to do such a thing?

Adam, what was hurting you?

—-

What did you want to let us know, Adam?

What did you want to say

that words could not speak?

What did you want to show us

that no pencil could draw,

no color could paint?

What was the point  behind the murder of these children?

Could you have told us in a letter?

Could you have whispered it in secret?

Had you not a friend?

Were you in trouble with your mother?

—-

All the days you spent locked up with yourself.

All that you missed out on in your youth

on account of your shyness.

Was it a gene?

Was it a sickness no doctor was ever called for?

Was it an issue unresolved?

Was it a past hurt that kept going on and on?

Or did you want to feel the pain some of your guardians said

you were not capable of feeling?

What was it, Adam?

I guess we’ll never know.

—-

Was it you, Adam?

Was it really you?

Was it “the loner who felt little pain,”

who did not quite belong in this world?

Was it the “nice, quiet, shy, bright kid”

everybody used to know?

Or was it the semi-automatic?

Was it the .223 Bushmaster?

Was it Glock? Was it Sig Sauer?

If you spared your mother’s life, would she have any regrets

raising you and your brother with a collection of guns in the house?

—-

How could we have helped you, Adam?

How could we keep the rest of our youth

safe from all this pain and sorrow?

Was it really you, Adam?

Was it your mother?

Was it your town?

Was it the world?

Was it every one of us?

How could we have helped you, Adam?

I guess we’ll never know.
